Brock "Un-talks": Visiting with Charlotte Johnston McMurray
Join for the October session of Brock “Un-talks” – a series of engaging, interactive presentations and hands-on workshops led by faculty members, staff and students from Brock’s Faculty of Humanities.
Speaker: Dr. Erin Akerman (Department of English Language and Literature)
Beginning in the late 1820s, Anishinaabe translator Ogenebugoquay/Charlotte Johnston McMurray (1806-1878) of Sault Ste. Marie kept a journal in which family and friends wrote and copied poems and drew floral images and pictures of the land.
In this workshop, we will view digital images of the journal, transcribing some of the entries and tracing their contributors. We will consider what Johnston McMurray’s journal tells us about Indigenous and settler relations in this place and time as well as the journal’s potential as a decolonial teaching tool, both when it was created and today.
